6 Things That Cover A Four-Day Trip In One Bag

Four days is the trip length people get most wrong.

Too short to justify a big case, too long to just wing it with a backpack. So most people split the difference badly and end up hauling a half-empty suitcase around for a long weekend.

Six things. That’s genuinely all a four-day trip needs.

Clothes and accessories laid out in a suitcase

1. Two tops and what you travel in

Three tops total, counting the one on your back.

Four days, three tops. You’ll re-wear one and nobody will clock it. If you’re somewhere hot and you sweat through things, rinse one in the sink on night two and it’s dry by morning.

Keep them the same colour family so everything works with both bottoms. It sounds fussy and it’s the thing that stops you packing a fourth “just in case” top.

2. One pair of bottoms, worn

For four days you genuinely need one pair of trousers or jeans, and you wear them on the way there.

If the trip has a smart evening in it, add a second. Otherwise don’t. Bottoms are heavy, they don’t need washing over four days, and the second pair is nearly always dead weight.

Shorts obviously don’t count against this if you’re somewhere hot. They weigh nothing.

3. Four days of underwear and two pairs of socks

Underwear is the one thing not to ration. It’s tiny, it weighs nothing, and there’s no upside to being clever about it.

Socks are different. Two pairs plus the ones you’re wearing covers four days easily unless you’re hiking.

Both go stuffed inside your packed shoes, which is space you’d otherwise waste entirely.

4. One extra pair of shoes, maximum

Wear the bulky pair, pack the light pair. That’s it for four days.

Honestly, for a lot of four-day trips you can get away with just the pair you’re wearing. City break, decent trainers, done.

The exception is if you’ve got one smart evening, and even then a pair of flat shoes packs down to almost nothing compared to a second pair of trainers.

5. A liquids bag that’s mostly solids

Four days is short enough that you can go almost entirely solid and skip the liquids rules.

Shampoo bar, solid deodorant, toothpaste tablets, a sunscreen stick. None of it counts toward your liquids allowance, none of it can leak into your clothes.

Whatever’s left goes in 60ml bottles rather than 100ml ones. Over four days you will not get through 100ml of anything.

6. One layer you can add or lose

A jumper, a light jacket, a shirt you can wear open. One thing, worn on the way.

This covers the aeroplane, the evening temperature drop and the over-air-conditioned restaurant, which are the three situations where people wish they’d packed something.

Beyond that, check the forecast and pack for what it says rather than for what might theoretically happen. Four days is short enough that the forecast is actually reliable.

What this leaves out on purpose

  • Gym kit, unless the gym is the point of the trip. It never gets used.
  • A second bag. One carry-on and a small personal item is plenty.
  • Full-size toiletries. Four days. Come on.
  • The backup outfit. If something goes badly wrong you can buy a t-shirt.

Why four days is the sweet spot

Under four days you can get away with almost anything, so there’s no real system to learn.

Over about a week you need a laundry plan, which changes the calculation.

Four days sits exactly in the middle: short enough that you never need to wash anything, long enough that packing badly is genuinely annoying. Get this length right and longer trips become easier, because the only thing that changes is adding a sink wash.

IMO once you’ve done four days properly out of a small bag you stop believing you ever needed the big case.

How to actually pack it

Order matters more than technique when the bag is this small.

Shoes go in first, along the bottom edge, with socks and chargers stuffed inside them. They’re the most awkward shape, so everything else packs around them rather than the other way round.

Roll the tops and underwear and lay them in a single layer. With four days of clothes you shouldn’t need to stack, which means you can see everything at once when you open the bag.

Wash bag goes on top, flat, where you can pull it out at security without unpacking. The layer you’re not wearing goes on top of that, since it’s the thing you’re most likely to want first.

Anything you want during the flight goes in the personal item, not the carry-on. Once that bag is in the overhead bin you’re not getting back into it easily.

The one thing worth spending money on

Not the suitcase. A decent merino t-shirt.

Merino doesn’t hold smell the way cotton does, which means one merino top genuinely covers two or three days of wear. On a four-day trip that’s the difference between three tops and two.

They’re not cheap, and one of them does more for your packing than any gadget, cube or compression sack will. If you travel more than twice a year it pays for itself quickly.

Common questions

Can I do four days in a personal item only?

Yes, if you wear the bulky things and go solid on toiletries. It’s tight but genuinely doable.

How many tops for four days?

Three including the one you travel in. Re-wear one.

Do I need to do laundry?

No. Four days is specifically short enough that you don’t.

What about a smart evening?

One extra pair of bottoms and a pair of flat shoes. Nothing more.

Roll or fold for a short trip?

Roll. With this little in the bag, rolling keeps things from sliding around as much as it saves space.

The short version

Three tops, one pair of bottoms worn, four days of underwear, one spare pair of shoes, a mostly-solid wash bag and one layer.

Six things. One small bag. Four days.
